Morocco: a one-tick destination? If you’ve climbed Toubkal, what else is there to do?Inter

In fact, the High Atlas mountains have the potential for a life-time’s worth of trekking, climbing and mountaineering. Indeed, many people find that once they have been to Morocco once, it is in their blood for life. If you have thumbed through staff member Des Clark’s guidebook, Mountaineering in the Moroccan High Atlas, you will quickly notice many areas that are simply ignored by the masses.

So why not get started with the handful of the other High Atlas 4,000m peaks in the Toubkal area, all easily accessible from the Toubkal refuges and Lépiney hut? If you are really keen and have a good level of fitness, you could take in all 4,000m peaks besides one (Mgoun, which is some distance to the East): highlights include Akioud 4,030m, Afella 4,040m, and the unpronounceable Biguinoussene 4,007m! These and other 4,000m peaks offer a variety of routes with different levels of challenge ripe for the taking.

Day 1Travel from Marrakech to Imlil (1,740m) via taxi or mini bus. Trek to mountain refuge (3,200m): 5 to 6 hour day; about 10km of distance
Day 2Acclimatisation day. A shorter day that takes in some height and, if people are feeling good, one of the 4,000m peaks.
Day 3Ascent of a 4,000m peak.
Day 4Ascent of a 4,000m peak.
Day 5Trek down from refuge to Imlil and head back to Marrakech: 4 hour day
