begIf you thought winter skills courses were only available in Scotland, then think again!

We want to invite you on a winter skills course with a difference. The Cairngorms, Scottish lodges and log fires all have their place, but why not inject a bit of  ‘Berber whiskey’ (mint tea) into proceedings? Put aside soggy bottoms, grey skies and drying rooms fit to burst, and instead learn your ice axe and crampon skills under blue skies and bright sunshine with plenty of névé. You could always book your course around Christmas or New Year for a special twist as well as a bit of Christmas shopping in the souks of Marrakech.

Skills covered include route choice, emergency procedures, winter movement skills i.e. ice axe and crampon work, personal admin (organisation of personal kit for winter mountaineering), avalanche risk assessment – all the basic skills and principles a mountaineer needs for safe travel in winter.

Day 1Travel from Marrakech to Imlil (1,740m) via taxi or mini bus. Trek to mountain refuge (3,200m): 5 to 6 hour day; about 10km of distance
Day 2 to 3Skills covered (within context of a mountain journey):
• Winter movement skills i.e. ice axe and crampon work
• Avalanche risk assessment i.e. look at the basic skills and principles a mountaineer needs for safe travel in winter.
• Emergency procedures
• Personal admin (organisation of personal kit for winter mountaineering)
• Route choice
Day 4Climb Toubkal (4,167m) via North or South Col: 5 to 7 hour day
Day 5Trek down from refuge to Imlil and head back to Marrakech: 4 hour day
Please note that the skills mentioned above will be passed on in the context a mountain journey. We will aim to summit Toubkal, the highest peak, over the course and use the surrounding peaks for teaching winter skills.
