INTRODUCTION

Short walk-ins, quality ice and Arctic beauty… now that is what we are talking about! Rjukan Norway is a great spot to get your first lead in on some of the more relaxed single pitch ice that is around. Or if you are a seasoned ice climber then this small Norwegian village and the surrounding areas also offers some steep pitches that are sure to get your heart racing as well as that deep forearm pump all ice climbers love!

 


Becasolid_blue_logouse of the technical nature of these trips, we only use instructors who hold the highest outdoor pursuits awards, in this case the Mountaineering Instructor Certificate. The MIC is a professional award and holders are assessed to high standards in the skills required for instructing winter mountaineering, including all aspects of winter mountaineering and climbing. We do not compromise on your safety.

 

 

TechTechnical trips are when mountaineering and/or summer and winter climbing skills/techniques are put to use i.e. a rope, and protection are used in ascent. Introduction to Ice Climbing

 

This course is about giving you all the skills you need to progress towards being a competent ice climber! The focus of this trip is to work on:

 

  • Movement skills on ice
  • Crampon and ice axe techniques/placements
  • Ice screw placement and anchor building specific to pure ice routes

 

And, if you are feeling comfortable, we will get you on the sharp end to lead your first route with the coaching of one of our instructors beside you! Please note this course is also aimed at those who have led before, but just want some further input from a seasoned instructor. Our instructors will also give you feedback and top tips throughout the week to aid you as you refine and develop your skills!

 

Dates: TBC – likely to be December 2016 / January 2017. Please get in touch if you have specific dates!

 

Venue: single and multi-pitch ice in the Rjukan area

 

Ratio of Instructor to Participants: up to 1:2 for this course. We prefer to keep to smaller rations to maximize input and development of participates. This also give us the possibility to get onto multi-pitch routes!

 

What is included in the price? Instruction and guiding and the use of technical ice axes, protection, and ropes throughout the week!

 

Excluded from price:

  • Transport & Food:  This cost will be split between the instructor and client(s). The hire car will be approx. £300 plus fuel in total and food approx. £100 – £150 per person. The cooking will be shared out between everyone and we will provide a meal plan which will take into account dietary requirements.
  • Accommodation: this is approx. £220 per person for the week
  • Personal kit: harness, helmet, crampons, winter clothing, etc.

- Travel day -Meet at the Oslo Gardermoen Airport and travel over to Rjukan. Buy food supplies for the week on route.
Day 1Head to one of the single pitch ice venues and cover the basics of ice climbing.
Day 2Venture out to a different venue and build on skills learned from the day before.
Day 3Head to a multi-pitch route and develop more skills and continue refining learned skills and and techniques.
Day 4Head out to a single pitch venue with the aim of participates building up to leading a route if comfortable.
Day 5Flexible day to head to another single pitch or multi-pitch venue and continue to consolidate skills.
- Travel day -Travel back to Oslo Gardermoen Airport and fly home!

Intermediate Ice Climbing

 

This course is about adding to your existing skills and helping you gain further confidence as a winter climber! We will give you daily feedback, tips and as well as input/coaching during the days activities. We will aim to improve your:

 

  • Pick and crampon placement
  • Gear placement and selection
  • Anchor/ belay systems
  • Multi-pitch skills such as stance selection and management, abseil retreats, etc

Day 5Flexible day to head to another single pitch or multi-pitch venue and continue to consolidate skills.
