The Mountain People is a community of professional guides, mountaineering instructors, mountain leaders and support staff who are passionate about the mountains, people and adventures.  Many of us are also involved with other businesses, outdoor pursuits centres, or work as freelance instructors or in international development. Because of our diverse backgrounds, collective energies and depth of experience we are well placed to provide you with unforgettable adventures in wild and challenging environments!





James is the International Director and senior instructor for The Mountain People. He holds the  Mountaineering Instructor Certificate and is keen summer and winter climber. Originally from California, he lived in Morocco for ten years, most recently in the High Atlas mountain village of Imlil, and is currently based in the UK. James comes alive in the mountains and loves his role as a climbing and mountaineering instructor and seeing people equipped for their own adventures.

Matt has lived in the Ardèche region of the south of France for the last six years. Prior to this he was in Morocco for 20 years running an adventure company in the High Atlas. He holds the Mountain Instructor Award and is one of the few Brits to have the qualification recognized in France. He is currently spending much of his time new routing on a massive new crag which has huge potential for many more trad routes. Matt also is one of the board members and is developing climbing trips and courses in the south of France for The Mountain People.




Frenchman by birth, but residing in the beautiful Gower peninsula, Alex is a highly skilled and qualified ski instructor and an International Mountain Leader. Alex is also currently working toward his Mountaineering Instructor Award. He enjoys jumping off summits with a parapente on his back.






Ishtar is always keen to take people out for sea cliff or mountain-based adventure and enjoys nothing more than seeing people learn and grow. He is currently living in south wales and spends his spare time training in the climbing gym, surfing and climbing some more. He is a Summer Mountain Leader and Single Pitch Award holder, and is looking to progress onto to the Mountaineering Instructor Award.





Starting out his career as an engineer with Rolls-Royce, Sam has now made the switch  to instructing and training in the outdoors and loves it! Sam holds the Single Pitch and Mountain Leader awards as well as a few other outdoor qualifications. Keen to ensure he has an adventurous sport for every weather condition, you may bump into him climbing, mountain biking or surfing his local break on the Gower.



Simon - The Mountain PeopleSIMON


Simon’s done a bit of everything – Army, marketing, volunteering, travelling – but never the ordinary. Variety is his passion, so he balances the mountains with family and his local allotment. He loves the outdoors, exploring wild places and challenging himself. When he’s not on the hill, he can be found swinging kettlebells or planning a local #microadventure. Simon is a WML and SPA (Single Pitch Award) holder.






With a background in both languages and administration, Miriam is ideally placed to help support The Mountain People office. She enjoyed the adventure of living and working in the mountain village of Imlil with James before relocating back to the UK. She always looks forward to the next visit back to Morocco to see her local friends.






This father and son combination are the backbone of our mule, porter and catering services for our Morocco trips! Hamid (father) has worked in the tourism industry as a cook for many years. Mohammed has learned much from his father, but also has become a gifted muleteer trainer and is keen to see good animal welfare practices develop in Morocco. He has had extensive training under the Donkey Sanctuary staff and takes the lead role ensuring the other muleteers working for us use best practice and look after their animals.





Des has been climbing and guiding for over 20 years in Scotland, the South America Andes, the Alps and the Moroccan High Atlas. He is author of “Mountaineering in the Moroccan High Atlas”, which is published by Cicerone. A keen birdwatcher when he has time, he has enjoyed spotting the very rare and endangered Bald Ibis in Morocco. He is an International Mountain Leader (IML) and is now working full time for an NGO. He still brings his many years of experience and knowledge to The Mountain People by sitting on our board of directors!




Nick is the founder of Red Rock International, a company that designs and delivers customised experiential training and events for the corporate world. Despite working full time for Red Rock, Nick deftly manages to fit in climbing, hillwalking and mountaineering. He instructs on the TMP Community Scottish Trips and also sits on the board of directors. Nick is a holder of the Winter Mountain Leader Award.





Robert has been on the board of directors since the beginning of The Mountain People. He helped set up Red Rock International with Nick is now its International Director. He loves both summer and winter mountaineering and is a Summer Mountain Leader and holder of the Single Pitch Award.
